Charlotte Southern in UgandaCharlotte Southern is a freelance multimedia journalist who is currently in the process of changing careers due to the declining journalism market. Although photography is her first passion, she has made the decision to pursue a career in nursing. One of the main reasons Charlotte went into journalism was to help others, as she feels that it is one of the responsibilities of the media to give a voice to those who do not have one. Through nursing she hopes to make a direct impact on people’s lives in the medical setting.

Charlotte is currently finishing prerequisite classes for nursing school and hopes to begin training in 2015. She lives in Denver, Colorado with her boyfriend Beau, step-daughters Kaelyn and Jordyn, and cat Maggie.

Journalism Background:

After earning her Master of Arts in Interactive Media from Elon University in North Carolina she relocated to Denver, Colorado in June 2011. She joined the masters program at Elon to broaden her storytelling skills so she may expand on her career as a journalist.

Prior to attending Elon University Charlotte worked as a freelance photojournalist in South Florida. Her work has been published by The Miami Herald, Bloomberg Wire Service, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, The Sarasota Herald-Tribune, The Prague Post, West Kendall Today, American Federation of Teachers publications, the AFL-CIO, Forum Publishing Group community newspapers, Next American City magazine, Meister Media trade publications, the University of Miami and others.

Charlotte has also pursued a number of personal projects in conjunction with non-profits focusing on social issues, most notably the devastation in Biloxi, Miss., after Hurricane Katrina, and education in developing countries. In the fall of 2005, Charlotte traveled to Uganda and documented the life of 22-year-old Rwandan genocide survivor, John Kayiranga, as he resumed his education from where he left off in third grade. John’s life was shown to the public through a 2008 photography show in the Wynwood Art District of Miami. All proceeds were donated to Lead Uganda, the organization funding the education of John and other children throughout the country.

Charlotte earned a Bachelor of Science of Communication from the University of Miami in 2005 with a double major in photojournalism and studio art. Originally born in the United Kingdom and holding dual-citizenship, Southern is an avid traveler who enjoys learning about other cultures.
